The Castle Pub, situated in the heart of Walthamstow Village, on the junction of Grosvenor Rise East, and Eden Road.

It's a very nice 'comfy' place with a great selection of beer. At a squeeze you could fit a couple of hundred people in there, but with a healthy dose of comfy sofas, its the kind of space that you can have a cosy afternoon in with just a couple of dozen.

The Castle is run by Roger, landlord of the Nags Head, just half a mile away at the other end of 'The Village'. He has transformed it from a very shabby drinking den to a light and airy space with really nice homely feel to it, and it now has a nice regular crowd of young locals.

Food

If you have seen one of the old posters, be aware that The Caslte does not serve food and we no longer do 'pizza-in-the-pub' due to lack of demand. It was kind of a relic of when we used to open at 4pm, but we now open at 6pm so most people have had a bite by then.

If, however you are visiting from afar and need a bite locally, Hoe street has a plethora of fast food places of all descriptions. Near the bottom of Grosvenor Park Road, on Hoe Street, there is also a Tesco Express in the petrol station with a selection of slightly healthier options if you prefer.

Otherwise the Orford Road has a nice selection of restaurants including the Village Kitchen (a fabulous, though slightly pricey world quizine restaurant).. .. a couple of very good Italian restaurants.. a Tapas bar and a Thai Lounge which are both very good apparently.

How to get there..

Train / Tube

If you are coming by train Walthamstow Central is the last stop on the Victoria Line. There is also a British Rail train from Liverpool Street to Chingford which stops there. If you are carrying anything heavy there is a cab office by the station, or it's about 10 minutes walk. The simplest way is leave the ticket office to your right, walk up to Hoe street (10m) and turn right onto it heading south. Walk 250m down Hoe Street and turn left into Grosvenor Park Road. Walk 100m up, and the road turns into Grosvenor Rise East after the staggered crossroads, and the Castle is a few meters up on the right. For a nicer walk taking you through 'The Village' turn right out of the ticket office and simply cross the road and walk up St. Mary's Road, taking the first right, and then first left onto Orford Road. Eden Road comes up on your right, and the Castle is 100m down on your left.

Buses

If you are coming by bus then it's about 3 minutes walk from the Bakers Arms Pub, at the junction of Lea Bridge Road, Leyton High Road and Hoe Street. There are quite a few buses that stop either on Lea Bridge Road, or on Hoe Street, and literally loads from Walthamstow Central. Directions are as above but walk north along Hoe Street, turning right into Grosvenor Park Road.

Personally I recommend the bus.. In the same way that everyone in the world has only 6 degrees of separation, I have a theory that everyone in London has only 3 buses of separation. For a £3.50 daily pass.. you can get there and back with no escalators, noise, walking, crowds, or uncooperative ticket machines.. and you get to see a bit of London at the same time.

See you there..
